Basis of the edition

The present edition is based on the photographs available at the Mainzer Photoarchiv of the Hethitologie Portal Mainz, as well as the available hand-copies and relevant secondary literature up to 2019. When the original manuscripts have been collated, this is noted in the commentary.

Commentary

This fragment preserves rather detailed descriptions of seasonal festivals, which follow the usual pattern known from other texts. The reference to mount Ku(n)kumuša (rev. iii 9′) shows that the geographical setting of the inventory is in the northern districts, since this mountain plays a role in rites connected with the area of Nerik (KUB 7.24+, KBo 20.87+). Noteworthy are the role of the Lord of the district, who apparently provides cattle and sheep from a town under his jurisdiction (rev. iii 10′-11′), and the unexpected mention of an obligation (išḫiul, obv. ii 2′).

iii 9′: The passage is reminiscent of KUB 7.24+, where the king promoted the construction of an anthropomorphic statuette of mount Malimaliya to be kept in the shrine of Mount Kukumuša, while “as a ḫuwaši, they place him in the town of Taḫniwara, on a rocky outcrop” (obv. 2-4, see Cammarosano 2018: 57). It is unfortunate that the name of the god treated in the present passage is broken.

iii 10′-11′: Haas 1994: 663 (citing Otten) observes that the offering of one ox and eigth sheep is frequent in the Hittite royal funerary ritual.
